Introvert problems: The time I went to a conference and hid from my hero

Are you an introvert? If you are, this story should make you cringe and nod along. At the beginning of November, I went to a writing conference in Las Vegas.

At the beginning of November, I went to a writing conference in Las Vegas. To put things into perspective: I love to travel. However, circumstances conspired to keep me home-bound for all of 2017. When 20BooksVegas opened for registration, I leapt at the chance to go.

Unfortunately, I’m an introvert. I’m a very social one, but all that means is that when I’m around people, it’s often exhausting. I also have occasionally crippling social anxiety.

Fear is a powerful emotion. Fear of rejection. Fear of humiliation. Fear of looking like a silly fangirl… Add social anxiety to that and wow. Pass the bourbon?

On day 2 of the conference, I had the chance to meet one of my heroes. Lindsay Buroker self-published her novels before most of us even knew what self-publishing was. The Emperor’s Edge is one of the best steampunk series I’ve ever read. The first book is free. You should check it out.

Lindsay spoke at the conference. But when she was done, instead of going up to her and introducing myself, I chickened out. Then I kicked myself all night. The next day, I popped an anxiety pill and screwed up the courage to go talk to her, but as I got up, five or six people surrounded her, and there was no way I was going to go introduce myself then. By the time the next session was over, she’d left.

If I had the chance right now, I’d march up to her, shake her hand, and thank her for inspiring me to publish By the Fates, Freed. She showed me just by writing and publishing amazing books, that I might be able to do the same thing. And then…she started blogging and podcasting about how to do just that. So, thank you, Lindsay. One of these days, I’ll work up enough courage to tell you this in person.

Speaking of nerves…I’m hard at work finishing up In His Collar. I have to send the book to my editor in ten days, and well…writing time has been a little hard to come by. But I’ll push through, and I can’t wait to share Nicholas’s story with you.

The price for All Tied Up For New Year’s goes up very soon.

The next book in the Restrained series is almost here. You’ll love sexy Greek bodyguard Milos and shy jewelry designer Elora. What dark secret does Milos hide under all those muscles? If Elora lets him in, will she be able to overcome the pain of her past?

All Tied Up is available for pre-order for the special low price of $0.99 for just a few more days. On November 15, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. PST, the price goes up to $3.99.
